O.J. Simpson has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping and armed robbery in relation to a sports memorabilia robbery in Las Vegas in September. Simpson and his two accomplices, Clarence Stewart and Charles Ehrlich, pleaded their innocence at the start of their criminal trial. Simpson is alleged to have stormed into collector Alfred Beardsley's hotel suite at the Palace Station in Las Vegas along with Five associates, and removed memorabilia items Simpson maintains were stolen from a storage facility. Three other co-defendants agreed to testify against Simpson as part of a plea agreement; Stewart, Ehrlich and Simpson face life imprisonment if found guilty. Beardsley and an associate claim guns were pulled during the stand-off, but the collector told the preliminary hearing earlier this month that Simpson wasn't one of the men brandishing a weapon.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was sentenced to three years probation for possession of a narcotic drug, cocaine, and three years probation for driving while under the influence. He also was ordered to serve one day in jail for the DUI. Tyson will serve that day in jail Tuesday. He is to report to a Maricopa County Jail in downtown Phoenix at 10 a.m. The sentence was handed down by Maricopa Superior Court Judge Helene Abrams. Tyson had faced up to 3.75 years in prison for the possession conviction and six months in jail for the DUI. The Judge warned Tyson that if he violates the terms of the probation, he still faces the prison time. Tyson was arrested Dec. 29, 2006, after a traffic stop after he had spent the evening at a Scottsdale club. A police officer said he saw Tyson wipe a white substance off the dashboard of the car and that Tyson's speech was slurred. Authorities said they found drugs in Tyson's pocket and car. Prosecutors had asked Abrams to send Tyson to prison for one year. Shane Krauser, a deputy county district attorney, said Tyson has a long arrest history including such offenses as rape, assault and a 2004 brawl in a New York City hotel. "Mr. Tyson is a repeat offender," Krauser said. "His criminal history is substantial because it contains mostly violent offenses." The prosecutor said Tyson never sought help until he was arrested and that he should be treated like any other defendant and not receive any preferential treatment because he had so many resources at this disposal.

Duane Chapman, known as 'Dog the Bounty Hunter' has offered to co-sign for the bond of jailed 'Girls Gone Wild' founder Joe Francis. After watching a jail house interview with Francis and independently researching Francis' legal situation, Chapman said he thinks Francis has been mistreated by the Florida legal system and has offered to stand up for Francis in court. "I make this offer to the judge who is keeping Joe Francis behind bars," Chapman said in a statement. "I will co-sign Joe's bond, and if he violates his bail in any way; if he fools me or proves me wrong, I will personally track him down to the ends of the earth at no charge, and bring him back before the judge." Chapman's wife, Beth, who owns the bond company, has offered to write the bond, creating a double risk for the Chapmans. Francis has been behind bars, first in Florida and now in Nevada, for more than six months. Although bail has been granted in Nevada, while Francis awaits trial on federal tax evasion charges, his bond on a separate case in Florida, possession of contraband medication, has been revoked.

John Travolta is suing the owners of the airport outside his exclusive "fly-in" community, claiming they lied to the Federal Aviation Administration to keep him from landing his Boeing 707 there. In the federal lawsuit, Travolta claims Greystone Airport owners James and Christine Garemore falsely changed the airport master record in 2006 to indicate that it could not support large airplanes. Travolta has a home at the Jumbolair Aviation Estates in Ocala, Florida and wanted to fly his Boeing 707 there. The lawsuit is seeking an injunction requiring the Garemores to immediately withdraw the 2006 report and authorize flights with the airport master record as it existed before. It also seeks to nullify the report because of false or misleading information to the FAA and to prohibit "future baseless filings." "The runway is not suitable for heavy aircraft. It is cracking and breaking," James Garemore said. "They are bringing this lawsuit against me, and all I was doing was trying to maintain safety here." Michael J. McDermott, Travolta's attorney, said Garemore's comments about the runway not being safe for large airplanes is incorrect. "It's spin in order to cover his butt because he knows that he is in big trouble for doing what he did, and we intend to establish that," McDermott said. Travolta built an $8 million home in Ocala and has continually used the runway without incident, the lawsuit said. It also claims Travolta was assured he would be able to use the airport.

Kiefer Sutherland, already on probation for a 2004 drunken driving arrest, was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence in a case the city attorney's office said could put him in jail for more than a year. "Sutherland was charged with single counts of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or above," said city attorney spokesman Nick Velasquez. "If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of a year in jail and a minimum of four days,"Velasquez said. "We also charged him with a second DUI offense within 10 years, which we believe also violates the terms of his probation," Velasquez added. If found guilty of violating probation, Sutherland could be sentenced to an additional six months. Sutherland remains free on $25,000 bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 16. "Because he's been charged with a misdemeanor, Sutherland won't have to appear in court for his arraignment unless the judge specifically orders him to be there," Velasquez said. Police said they stopped Sutherland shortly after 1 a.m. when they saw him make an illegal U-turn. He was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. Authorities haven't disclosed his blood-alcohol level except to say it was .08 or above, exceeding California’s legal limit. Sutherland was also arrested for DUI in 2004, and in November of that year he pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count. He was sentenced to Five years probation, 50 hours of community service and was ordered to attend an alcohol treatment program.

As jurors returned to deliberations in Phil Spector’s murder trial, his defense filed a motion asking the judge to give the panel more guidance to clarify controversial new instructions he issued last week to help break a deadlock and avoid a mistrial. In a hearing outside the jury's presence, Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler listened to arguments on the motion and told attorneys he would think about it, but gave no indication how he would rule. Amid the hearing, the jury sent a note asking for a VCR. Trial evidence included a videotaped interview of Spector's chauffeur by sheriff's investigators. The driver testified that Spector came out of his house with a gun and said, "I think I killed somebody." There was also a videotape of a driveway fountain. The defense contends noises including the fountain made the quote suspect. Spector is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 3, 2003, death of actress Lana Clarkson from a gunshot fired in her mouth. The defense contends the shot was self-inflicted, either an accident or a suicide. After the jury reported the 7-5 impasse last week, the judge withdrew a so-called pinpoint instruction and decided that the instruction misstated the law by unduly limiting possibilities that the jury could consider. He gave a new instruction that included examples of inferences the jury could draw from the evidence, including the possibility that Spector forced Clarkson to place the gun in her own mouth and it went off. He also cautioned that he was not suggesting that any of the examples took place, and they could be rejected. In the defense motion, Spector's attorneys said that Spector would have needed a second firearm to have forced Clarkson to put the gun in her mouth. They asked that the judge tell jurors there is no evidence in the record that Spector had a second firearm present. The defense also asked that the jury be told that Spector cannot be found guilty merely for aiding, encouraging or advising Clarkson to commit suicide. The prosecution argued that any further instruction on the issue of suicide would weigh against its case. "It highlights the defense case," prosecutor Alan Jackson told the judge. "It's saying if you believe she killed herself, don't bother with any of those other instructions." The case went to the jury on Sept. 10 and the jury foreman told the judge on Sept. 18 that the panel was deadlocked after four ballots. After two days of contentious debate among attorneys on new instructions, the panel was sent back into deliberations on Sept. 20.

There is still no verdict in the murder case against record producer Phil Spector. Spector's wife, had Rachelle sparred with the judge over a gag order and Spector himself publicly denied he had criticized the judge and jury pool. Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler had sent the jurors into deliberations after asking if any had heard or seen any news reports that could affect their discussions. Spector is charged with second-degree murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson, who was shot through the mouth after going home with Spector from a nightclub on Feb. 3, 2003. He faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted. Deliberations for the jury of nine men and three women began after Five months of testimony and continue with no verdict. Prosecutors sought to show during the trial that Spector had a history of threatening women. The defense contended Clarkson killed herself. Just before sending the case to the jury, Fidler slapped a gag order on Spector and his wife. Fidler said Rachelle Spector had sent e-mails to reporters pointing out a TV interview she had given, despite the fact that Fidler had warned her against such activity. Fidler also admonished Spector and Clarkson's family not to speak to the press during deliberations.

Denise Richards has denied claims made by her ex-husband Charlie Sheen that she wants him to provide a sperm donation so she can have another child. The couple, who have two daughters, finalized their divorce last November, although Sheen is heading back to court to try and prevent Richards from phoning him whenever she likes, and to revisit custody terms. Sheen now alleges Richards asked for a sperm donation. He says, "There was a request for a donation. Without getting into it more, there is a specific document relating to this that I am going to reserve for a court." Sheen, who is currently engaged to Brooke Mueller, has no intention of providing a donation: "I would sooner, in actually what I'm wearing, walk on the surface of the moon." Richards has denied Sheen's claims. She says, "I don't want another child right now. I have my hands full." Sheen counters her denial, "She can make every claim in the world. But what she stated in something she wrote would completely and totally defy that."

Ian McKellen has hit out at Hollywood movie producers for encouraging homosexual actors to remain 'in the closet'. McKellen, who revealed he was gay in 1988, has in the past criticized actors for not 'coming out'. But he now blames the forces behind the film industry for pressuring gay actors to keep their sexuality a secret. McKellen says, "With all that liberal attitude in Hollywood, you have a local industry which is saying to local people who live in the area, 'When you come to work, you are not gay.' And I think to myself, 'Can people whose minds work like that make good films? And if at the heart of Hollywood there is that lie, how many other lies are there?'" "And it's the producers who have this problem. God knows what sort of people they are, who think that it's impossible for you and me to fancy the same person. Well, what dull lives they must have."

Rap star Kanye West's mother, Donda West, died in a Los Angeles-area hospital due to possible complications from surgery, a spokesperson with the L.A. County Coroner's office said. She was 58. West helped manage her son's businesses and educational foundation after retiring in 2004 after 30 years as an English professor at Chicago State University. She died Saturday night at Centinela Freeman Hospital in seaside Marina del Rey. Donda West's spokesperson, Patricia Green, declined to comment on the cause of death, but reports on various media said she died because of complications related to a cosmetic procedure. The L.A. County Coroner's office said it would perform an autopsy on West later this week to determine the cause of death. The spokesman did not know what surgery West had. She worked as chief executive of West Brands LLC, the parent company of her son's business ventures, and as head of the Kanye West Foundation. "She was a universal model," Green said about West. "She made people want to be around her." Mother and son spoke frequently about their close relationship.

Jason Wahler's string of arrests have finally caught-up with him. He began serving a 30-day Seattle prison sentence for his April arrest on charges of assault and underage drinking. "Jason is taking full responsibility for his previous actions," Wahler's publicist Siri Gaber said in a statement. Wahler was arrested April 8 in Seattle, Washington and booked on charges of assault and criminal trespassing. According to the incident report, officers responded to a disturbance at a Marriott hotel where a security guard claimed two guests had been wrestling in the lobby. After issuing warnings to stop, the guard reportedly accused Wahler of punching him in the mouth before he was restrained by a friend. Wahler then allegedly fled the hotel, only to return "a short time later" when police found him passed out in a third-floor hallway "smelling strongly of alcohol." "The 30-day sentence was handed to Wahler when he plead guilty to charges of assault and a minor exhibiting signs of intoxication," Seattle City Attorney's Office spokeswoman Ruth Bowman said. Wahler had also originally been charged with criminal trespassing, however that charge was dropped. According to Bowman, Wahler "could get out in 20 days for good behavior." While he was not so lucky this time around, Wahler had already side-stepped an earlier jail stint. Last September, Wahler reportedly punched a tow-truck driver as well as a Los Angeles city employee and was accused of using racial slurs against the victims. He plead no contest to one count of battery and received a two-month jail sentence and was also required to attend a one-day program at the Museum of Tolerance. Wahler was due to begin serving his sentence in early May, but that was delayed by a judge due to a stint in rehab which he completed over the summer. Wahler also completed community service at a Laguna-area church mission; went to four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week; attended anger-management counseling; and also spoke at local high schools, warning students about the dangers of drinking irresponsibly and disobeying the law. "He has been through rehabilitation, done community service and has been attending AA meetings," Gaber said in the statement. "He would like to be an example to young people to make them realize that there are consequences for bad behavior."

Rupert Everett, who is openly gay, says he is single because young gay men aren't interested in dating someone older than them. He said, "Unfortunately, I am single, yes, but I'm too exhausted for anything else and being gay is a young man's game." "No one wants me. Being gay or being a Woman have one big thing in common, which is that we both become invisible after the age of 42. Who wants a gay 50-year-old? No one let me tell you." "I could set myself on fire in a gay bar, and people would just light their cigarettes from me," he said. Everett admits he wants to grow old gracefully, but he would like to find a boyfriend first. He added: "I don't want to be carried out of a club wearing a tie-dye T-shirt and a cap on the wrong way around when I am 70, but I would like to settle down a bit, maybe with a partner. In some ways I do feel more settled, but now I want to take part in things."

David Hans Schmidt, who plead guilty last month to attempting to extort Tom Cruise, was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Phoenix, Arizona home. Schmidt was under house arrest after agreeing to plead guilty to a $1 million extortion fiasco, using Tom Cruise's stolen wedding photos. "Authorities went to Schmidt's Phoenix home after a tracking device on him had not moved and he hadn't checked in," said police spokesman, Lt. Anthony Lopez. Schmidt was facing up to two years in prison after he had agreed to a plea agreement in the case. His attorney, Nancy Kardon, said she had spoken to Schmidt earlier this week and was preparing for an Oct. 11 hearing in federal court where he would enter his formal guilty plea to attempted extortion. She said she had planned to ask for probation. "I was greatly saddened by his loss and I found him to be a very kind man," Kardon said. He was contacted by Marc Lewis Gittleman who had obtained the wedding photos after recovering them from a damaged computer hard drive brought in for repair by a photographer. Schmidt emailed Cruise with samples of the photos, and asked for more than $1 million to keep them off the market. Schmidt had brokered some of Hollywood's most infamous deals in recent years, including the Dustin Diamond sex tape, Tonya Harding honeymoon sex tape, a Colin Farrell sex tape and other scandals.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence stemming from a traffic stop last year as he was leaving a nightclub. Tyson quietly acknowledged to a judge that he had cocaine and was impaired when he was stopped for driving erratically in Scottsdale, Arizona on Dec. 29. He pleaded guilty to a single Felony count of cocaine possession and a misdemeanor DUI count and faces up to four years and three months in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 19. A felony charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and a second misdemeanor DUI charge were dropped, according to the terms of a plea agreement. Defense lawyer David Chesnoff said Tyson has been clean and sober for eight months. "It's obvious this was a crime he was committing against himself," Chesnoff said. Police stopped Tyson after he had spent the evening at the Scottsdale club. An officer said he saw Tyson wiping a white substance off the dashboard of his black BMW, and that his speech was slurred. Authorities said they found bags of cocaine in Tyson's pocket and in his car. Tyson told officers later that he used cocaine "whenever I can get my hands on it," and that he preferred to smoke it in Marlboro cigarettes with the tobacco pulled out, according to court documents. He also told police that he used marijuana that day and was taking the antidepressant Zoloft, the documents state. Since his arrest, Tyson checked himself into an in-patient treatment program for what his lawyer called "various addictions." Defense lawyer David Chesnoff had said previously that he had try to keep the boxer out of prison.

A Mexican judge has ruled to close the criminal case against bounty hunter and TV reality star Duane 'Dog' Chapman, but state prosecutors have appealed the decision, officials said. In the ruling, Judge Jose Alberto Montes said the statute of limitations has expired on the case, said Guillermo Diaz, assistant prosecutor in Puerto Vallarta. Chapman was arrested by U.S. authorities on a Mexican warrant stemming from his 2003 capture of fugitive convicted rapist and Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster in Puerto Vallarta. Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. State prosecutors want to continue pursuing Mexico's request to have Chapman extradited, Diaz said. The courts are expected to rule on prosecutors' appeal in coming months. Chapman, who stars in the A&E television Hawaii-based show 'Dog the Bounty Hunter,'¯ expressed relief at Montes' decision. "The weight has been lifted off my chest,"¯ he said. "Viva la Mexico!"

Kali Bowyer, the Woman alleging comic Chris Rock is the father of her teenage son is refusing to give up her paternity fight, despite a negative first DNA test. Rock and his wife Malaak released a statement, proclaiming victory in the legal battle and criticizing Bowyer for claiming Rock was the father. But Bower insists the proceedings are far from over. Bowyer says, "We are taking a second test, due to Rock's history of past paternity tests." Bowyer claims she is one of a handful of women who have brought paternity cases against Rock, and one European woman is still charging him with fathering her child, even though she lost her case in court. Bowyer also denies claims Rock made in his statement that she took money for selling her story to the tabloids earlier this year. She says, "No one made money from selling stories to the tabloids." Bowyer is upset that Rock and his wife went public with the findings of the first DNA test while there was a court order in place instructing both parties not to discuss the case with the media. Bowyer says, "There is a protective order regarding the results, so I will let my lawyers deal with the current situation. As for the second DNA test, Chris, myself and our lawyers have to meet for mediation within 20 days. If he agrees to take the DNA test then, I see him do it and it comes back negative, I'll move on." Bowyer claims she never planned to go public with her 10-year-old paternity battle but is desperate to get to the bottom of her 13-year-old son's health problems and feels sure the medical history of the boy's father will help her to get the answers she needs. She says, "I never said Chris Rock is 100 per cent the father of my child, but, due to the dates and the information I received from doctors when my son was born, I'm 99 per cent sure Chris Rock is the father. He looks exactly like Chris' brother Tony, it's a very distinctive resemblance."

Pete Doherty faces jail if he doesn't undergo rehab to tackle his addiction to drugs. He pleaded guilty to possessing quantities of crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana and ketamine, as well as to two drunk driving offenses. Judge Davinder Lachhar told Doherty he would only avoid jail on the condition he entered rehab before he is due to be sentenced. Judge Lachhar said "If you go to this place to have detox and take advantage of it then we will see what sentence is appropriate when you next come. But if you do not, I can tell you now that you will go into custody." Speaking to reporters outside court, Doherty vowed to abide by the ruling, saying, "I have got no choice, have I? It's rehab or jail. I was going to rehab anyway to be honest with you, this is just a little push."

A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the murder case against Phil Spector when the jury reported that it was deadlocked 10-2 in favor of convicting him of killing actress Lana Clarkson more than four years ago. The prosecutor's office announced it would seek to retry Spector, and the family of Clarkson also pledged to press on. "We will not rest until justice is done," said John C. Taylor, a lawyer for the family. The mistrial came after months of a trial in which jurors had to decide who pulled the trigger of the gun that went off in Clarkson's mouth early Feb. 3, 2003. The jury had met for about 44 hours over 12 days since getting the case Sept. 10. A week ago, the jury foreman had reported a 7-5 split. After that, Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler withdrew a jury instruction that he decided misstated the law and issued a new one giving examples of what panelists could draw from the evidence, including the possibility that Spector forced Clarkson to place the gun in her own mouth. Fidler polled the jury, and each member agreed that a unanimous decision was not possible. "We will seek the court's permission to retry the case and begin immediately to prepare for a retrial," prosecutor Steve Cooley said in a statement. A hearing was set for Oct. 3.

George Clooney and girlfriend, Sarah Larson were injured when their motorcycle collided with a car on a narrow road in New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. Clooney suffered a broken rib and scrapes while Larson broke her foot in the collision. "The two were treated at Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen and released," Clooney's spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said. "He's doing fine," Rosenfield said. "He has a broken rib, it's very painful and it'll take a long time to heal." "Clooney and Larson were traveling north and sped up to pass on the right of a vehicle that was reportedly preparing to make a right turn," said Weehawken police Sgt. Sean Kelly. "Both were wearing helmets." "It wasn't known whether the other driver, whose identity was not immediately released, used a turn signal," Kelly said. The accident was under investigation. Rosenfield said the accident occurred when the vehicle's driver signaled a left-hand turn, but turned right and struck Clooney's motorcycle. "The car signaled left. George was riding to the right. The driver decided to make an abrupt right turn and clipped George," he said. Clooney was in the New York area filming a new movie. Rosenfield said, "Clooney's recovery shouldn't interrupt the production's schedule."

Luciano Pavarotti, whose grand showmanship made him one of opera's most beloved tenors, has died. He was 71. Pavarotti had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and underwent further treatment as recent as two weeks ago. His manager, Terri Robson, said in a statement that Pavarotti died at his home in Modena, Italy, at 5 a.m. local time, Wednesday. "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," the statement said. Pavarotti's voice made him the ideal interpreter of the Italian lyric repertory, especially in the 1960s and '70s when he first achieved stardom. Instantly recognizable from his charcoal black beard and tuxedo-busting girth, Pavarotti radiated an intangible magic that helped him win millions of fans worldwide.

Isaiah Washington is upset over a TV interview in which he seemed to poke fun at former 'Grey's Anatomy' co-star Patrick Dempsey for not sticking up for him in the aftermath of his gay slur scandal. Washington was arguing with Dempsey on the set of the show last year when he uttered the slur, which sparked a major controversy. The comment led to co-star T.R. Knight 'coming out' as a gay man, but Washington has always maintained the slur wasn't directed at Knight. In a TV interview on 'Access Hollywood,' host Billy Bush asked Washington if he felt Dempsey should have spoken up for him. Bush asked, "Dempsey, it seems to me, could've cleared everything up by standing up and saying one thing, 'Isaiah never said that to T.R., I was there.' If he's a friend, how could he not do that?" Washington replied, "Nice observation Billy. He protects himself well. He did what he felt he needed to do and remained silent." Now, Washington, who was fired from the show earlier this summer, is upset with the way the TV interview was edited, making it look as if he blames Dempsey for his firing. Bush says, "My only regret is that due to time on our show, in the edited interview, we went straight to the outrage and it came off as if I was berating Patrick." "Not the case. I should have fought for the extra time. I am quite sure that Isaiah is difficult on the set, a perfectionist that compares himself to others. It's divisive, but frankly, this town has plenty of difficult actors. The legends are there. He means well."

The late James Brown was named the real father of two more children. He had publicly acknowledged six children, but new DNA testing revealed that LaRhonda Petitt, and another unidentified individual are also Brown's kids. Petitt, who is 45-years-old, is the oldest of Brown's identified children. She revealed that Brown picked her mother out of a Los Angeles audience and the two began dating, but that Brown split when he found out about the pregnancy. Said Petitt, "I was angry that he was out there making all this money, and he wasn't doing anything for my mother and me. I could have had a better life." Several other people have claimed to be Brown's children, but so far, only two of the dozen or so tested have been positively identified as Brown's children.
